An Art Deco, eighteen carat gold and diamond encrusted pocket lighter with cover. This is a stunning example of Cartier at its best, during their pomp. The solid gold lighter was made in Paris, France, during the 1930's and has all the hallmarks of the luxury atelier's work at its best. A stunning shape, beautiful mechanism, hand set old cut diamonds and all hand engraved signatures. The snuffer part of the lid is pavé set with thirty six old cut diamonds all hand set into a platinum fronted cover. The perfect way to extinguish your lighter!
This type of lighter is known as a "lift arm". Simply referring to the fact that to access the flint wheel and open up oxygen to the wick, the snuffer arm must be raised. Once raised it is very simple to strike. To extinguish simply snap down the sprung snuffer arm. There are two screws in the base of the lighter. One reveals the sprung flint pusher, and the other is removed in order to fill the lighter with conventional lighter fluid. (this can be purchased via any online retailer)
The lighter is hand engraved 'Cartier" on the base along with two different assay marks, or poinçon. The lighter is also marked '18ct' on the inside of the lid hinge. The lighter was made circa 1935, and is all original, and exceptional throughout. It is fully working, with a new flint has been added, just requiring the filling of lighter fluid.
